McCall Winter Carnival is a community winter tradition for over 50 years. The inspiration for Winter Carnival actually dates back to 1924, when Payette Lakes Sports Carnival was created and was attended by approximately 2000 people. The Sports Carnival lasted many years and eventually evolved into the “Ice Break-Up Contest”, before closing for good in 1941.
In 1965, the community rallied to bring back a winter festival to McCall and so the first Winter Carnival was held the same year. It was a simple two-day event that drew regional visitors to McCall. The Carnival has continued to grow and expanded into the 10-day festival we know today. In 2023, McCall Winter Carnival will take place from Friday, January 27 to Sunday, February 5.
